Coach Awet Abraha

Awet is a product of the CYDC Panthers program, having played from 2004 - 2010 under John Hegwood (Jr Trojans, NSD, Calgary Elite, CYDC Panthers). He was a member of the Bishop McNally High School basketball team from 2007 - 2010 (team captain all three years) and was selected to the Calgary High School All-Star Game in 2009 & 2010. Most recently, Awet played for the Mount Royal University Men’s Basketball Team (2010 - 2015) and was team captain & MVP in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Awet's Career highlights also include:

  • ACAC Men’s basketball Gold Medalist 2012 (MRU)
  • CCAA Men’s basketball silver medalist 2012 (MRU)
  • CCAA Academic All-Canadian 2012

After graduating in 2016 from MRU with a BBA major in Accounting, Awet wanted to stay close to the game, and coaching was something that he knew he wanted to do.

In his own words, Awet says, “It’s a blessing what the game has done for me and my family. I am forever grateful for what coach John Hegwood has taught me on and off the court during my years in the program. I have benefited greatly from people that volunteered their time and effort to ensure I stayed in the right path and to get to the position I am at today. Therefore, I see it as my duty to pass it on and do the same for the next generation to help them fulfill their goals and dreams. Lastly, also for the love of the game.”
